individual relationship counselling

how can individual counselling help with relationship issues?

Individual counselling can help to heal problematic behavioural and emotional patterns that get in the way of sustaining healthy relationships. For example, abandonment fears, which tend to drive clinging and anxious behaviours in relationships, or fears of closeness, which often drive relationship avoidance or distancing behaviours within relationships.

According to attachment theory (a well-researched area in psychology), we each have a specific pattern of behaviour in relationships that was formed through our childhood relationships with our primary caregivers. This pattern of behaviour is our ‘attachment style’. While each attachment style has its strengths, some aspects of our attachment style may also prevent us from forming stable and healthy relationships with others. Individual counselling can modify these aspects of our attachment style. This removes relationship blocks and builds the skills needed to have satisfying relationships.

what approach do you use for individual relationship counselling?

I use a practical, coaching-style process to support clients to transform patterns of relating. This involves exploring the following areas, related to how the client navigates relationships:

  • core wounds and limiting beliefs

  • relationship needs and expectations

  • boundaries

  • communication

  • behavioural coping mechanisms.

In each area, we identify current patterns and, where these require adjustment, we apply practical strategies to help the client shift to healthier patterns that better serve them and their relationships.

DO YOU SEE INDIVIDUALS WHO WANT TO WORK ON ISSUES OTHER THAN RELATIONSHIP ISSUES?

Yes, I am happy to support individuals with any life issues they would like to work on. Before completing a Masters in relationship therapy and specialising in this area, I spent many years as a generalist counsellor for individuals. Therefore, I have skills at supporting individuals with the full range of life issues, including negotiating life transitions, building self-worth, grief and loss, and self care and positive coping skills. I also have a special interest in supporting individuals dealing with the impacts of complex trauma (developmental trauma arising from events occurring in childhood and adolescence).
